Vincenzo came from Perugia in central Italy in 1964. A doctor of Agricultural Sciences he came to do genetic research at Melbourne University.

Among his many and varied qualifications was oenology, and in 1967 he planted 18 acres of Shiraz on the Yarra Valley site now known as St Hubert, the first re-planting in the region.

In the same year he managed Tasmania’s first ever grape crush in the historic Hobart Women’s prison.

Vincenzo then managed the Waikerie Cooperative Winery and Distillery, and in 1972 introduced cold fermentation of reds which led to a gold medal, a first for an irrigated red in Australia.

Vincenzo opened The Settlement Wine Co. in 1976 introducing his “Big Reds” and sparkling shiraz to McLaren Vale and is still famous for these wines today.

Vincenzo has been making Madeiras, Sherries and Ports since the late 60’s and his methods and traditions are still used today in the making of our fortifieds and liqueurs, the largest range in McLaren Vale.

The Settlement Wine Co. has changed its name and location, but little else. These days, Settlement Wines is run by Vincenzo and his two children, Jason and Annika, and their team of dedicated staff.

Those who remember Enzo’s famous hospitality from the old Settlement Wine Co. will be pleasantly surprised to see that not much has changed at our new cellar door on Seaview Road, with the Berlingieri family welcoming all of our customers, old and new, to come and taste some great wine, great food and have an experience that we hope you will remember.
